Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn at Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. At the age of five her father was a carnival barker, leaving Ruth's mother with no choice but to be a cleaning lady and waitress in order to feed the family. Ruth was a student and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. She quit the school she attended within two years of her education in pursuit of the profession of acting. Her path did not come without challenges. When she was in New York, her first task was to pose stills for crime magazines. the theatre work that she wanted eluded. The next position she was offered was an "hat check" girl for a nightclub before she gave up and relocated to Boston. It was there that she made a buck as an usherette by in the daytime, while at night she was a part of the New England Repertory Company. It was her first acting job. She has also completed her studies at Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
